SMOOTH ASPHALT SAVES FUEL:  A number of studies have concluded that pavement roughness, not pavement type, is responsible for differences in fuel mileage.  A 2000 study conducted at the Westrack Test Facility in Nevada concluded that trucks running on a smooth pavement could save 4.5% on fuel consumption.  Smoothness also means that truck tires don’t bounce on the pavement and deliver the kind of impact loading they would on a rougher pavement.  The Federal Highway Administration has published information that increasing pavement smoothness by 25 percent results in a 10% increase in the life of the pavement.  Also, the Missouri DOT published a study of the results of their Smooth Roads Initiative. It indicates a 2.46 percent fuel saving on roads that have been smoothed out with an asphalt overlay.

The History of Hot Mix Asphalt in Colorado

The hot mix asphalt industry of Colorado has a proud tradition and a rich history. A comprehensive report entitled "The History of Hot Mix Asphalt in Colorado: Striving for Quality in Performance" has been developed. The report explains and discusses the changes and advancements over the past 85 years.

NAPA VIDEOS TRANSLATED INTO SPANISH
In NAPA's efforts to become more bilingual, one of their publications has been translated into Spanish by the Mexican Asphalt Association. The Spanish version of "Paver Operations for Quality" (IS-125(S)) has the same information as the English version and can be purchased for $10 per copy.

NAPA now has three "Best Practices" paving videos:
TAS-028P Paving Practices for Quality--International Format
TAS-028S Paving Practices for Quality
TAS-029 Spanish Safety Orientation for Highway Construction (with English Translation)

espocNAPA MEMBERS – Make Use of Safety Tips through ESPOC Says
In the early 1990’s, NAPA’s Environmental, Safety, and Plant Operations Committee (ESPOC) decided to create a series of tip sheets that would provide workers at the plant with both safety and technical information. Members of the committee provide theideas and wrote the articles. They are designed to be broad in nature and not cover a particular process. These tip sheets, called ESPOC Says, are sent monthly to NAPA Members and cover topics such as confined spaces, ways to tune a burner, and the safety issues surrounding asphalt cement tanks.  Look for archived ESPOC Says on Plan for Safe Night Paving, and A Simple Way to Improve Safety Around Your Hot Mix Asphalt Facilities.   ESPOC Says are available through the MEMBERS ONLY section of the NAPA website.  Username and Password information for representatives of NAPA member companies can be obtained by contacting NAPA at 888-HOT-MIXX.

NAPA DEVELOPS COMPREHENSIVE HMA CD-ROM
A complete overview of Hot Mix Asphalt on one CD-Rom! The National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) has developed the equivalent of a 350-page textbook on HMA technology. (TAS-30) document provides an overview of materials, mix design, mix selection, structural design, construction, pavement evaluation, and pavement maintenance and rehabilitation. There are photos, photo galleries, animations, and movie clips to hold the user's interest and illustrate key points. The text contains links between terms and other portions of the CD where the terms are discussed. It also has topic search capability as well as a glossary. To order, contact Judy Hornung, Publications & Information Services Coordinator. You can reach her via e-mail at jhornung@hotmix.org.
