Colorado State Legislators Visit Asphalt Paving Project – Highway funding, jobs creation and maintaining our highway system were all discussed as part of a CAPA coordinated site visit to a night time paving project by three state legislators. Rep. Brian DelGrosso (R. Loveland), Rep. Glenn Vaad (R. Greeley) and Senator Scott Renfroe (R. Weld County) visited the rubblization plus asphalt overlay project on I-25, near Fort Collins. The visit underscored the job creation through transportation investment and provided an opportunity for the industry to showcase a cost effective technology to rehabilitate deteriorated concrete pavement while minimizing the impact to the traveling public. CAPA Member Coulson Excavating Co. Inc. of Loveland hosted the visit
Larimer County Evaluates Warm Mix Asphalt & RAP Paving County Road 17 in Larimer County has been anything but ordinary this summer. A Test and Evaluation project has been developed and the County is evaluating warm mix asphalt, recycled asphalt pavement (20% top mat) and warm mix asphalt with RAP. According to Rusty Mc Daniel, Larimer County, the paving of each of the sections went well, especially the section of road with WMA and 20% RAP top mat. CAPA Member Lafarge West Inc. was the paving contractor on the project.

“Transportation Builds Our Economy” was the theme of the recent Fly-In to Washington D.C. of the Transportation Construction Coalition (TCC). Colorado was represented by 15 business leaders and industry association staff. One of the key points made to the Colorado congressional delegation is that there is not a better way to spur economic recovery and jobs creation than investment into infrastructure and capital construction. One revealing statistic is that 6% of the ARRA (Stimulus) funds were for transportation projects and this resulted in 24% of the jobs created or saved by ARRA funds.
How Long Do Asphalt Pavements Last??
Submitted by Scott Davis, Schmidt Construction Company Here are some pictures of roads that we are reconstructing and overlaying for El Paso County that our company originally built 25 to 30 years ago. The location is near the corner of Grinnell and Fontaine Blvd in the Security-Widefield area. As you can see the sub-grade is all clay and no maintenance had been performed for all those years. The road in the photos was constructed with 6 to 8 inches of base and four inches of asphalt. Other roads in the area we are going to overlay have a sand sub-grade and we constructed them with six inches of base and some of the streets only had 2 inches of asphalt and lasted for almost 30 years. The old asphalt pavement in the picture was 100% rounded material from our Fountain Pit. Thought there may be interest in some roads that were constructed using a road-base section without sub-grade treatment and minimal asphalt thickness.

Here are a few scenes from the "Best in Colorado" Awards dinner and the 2010 RMAECS.
